India Extends Income Tax Filing Deadline to September 15, 2025

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in India has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025-26 from July 31 to September 15, 2025, specifically for salaried individuals and entities without audited accounts. This extension addresses the extensive structural and content revisions in the ITR forms aimed at simplifying compliance and improving accuracy, which have delayed the development and rollout of the required filing utilities. The CBDT highlighted that TDS credits, which are expected to reflect in early June, further reduce the effective filing window without the extension. The extension aims to mitigate stakeholder concerns and ensure the integrity of the filing process. Separately, in the United States, the IRS has extended the 2024 federal income tax filing deadline to June 16, 2025, for taxpayers residing abroad, including military personnel, with further extensions available until October 15, 2025, upon request. These adjustments reflect efforts by tax authorities to accommodate the complexities and operational challenges taxpayers face in meeting filing deadlines.
