West Nile, Other Viruses Spread by Mosquitoes in U.S.

Health officials in Illinois, Vermont, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Texas have detected mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus and are warning of increased mosquito-borne illnesses due to warmer and wetter conditions. In some regions, Jamestown Canyon virus, chikungunya, and dengue have also been found or reported. While most people infected with these viruses show no symptoms, severe illness—including encephalitis and death—remains a risk, particularly for seniors and those with weakened immune systems. Authorities urge residents to eliminate standing water, use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and avoid outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours. Communities are conducting widespread pesticide spraying and targeted mosquito control programs in response. Public awareness and proactive prevention are being emphasized to reduce infection risk and prevent outbreaks.
