New York City Reports Decrease in Crime Rates

Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced a significant drop in overall crime and shootings across New York City in 2024, with a 2.9% decrease in overall index crime compared to the previous year. This decline includes reductions in murder (down 3.6%), robbery, burglary, and grand larceny auto, with 377 murders reported in 2024, 14 fewer than in 2023. Notably, transit crime also decreased by 5.4% over the year, despite some high-profile incidents that have affected public perception. However, certain violent crimes, such as rape and felony assaults, saw increases, highlighting a complex crime landscape. Adams emphasized the challenge of changing public perception amidst improvements in crime statistics, which he claims are not fully recognized by New Yorkers. The NYPD's record of removing nearly 6,100 guns from the streets in 2024 has been credited for the reduction in gun violence and shooting incidents.
