JCP&L Upgrades $50.3M Substation for 4,500 Sussex County Customers

Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiary, has initiated a $50.3 million upgrade of a transmission substation in Franklin Borough, New Jersey, aimed at improving reliability for approximately 4,500 customers in Sussex County. This project is part of the Energize365 program, which includes a broader $26 billion investment to modernize the electric grid across six states by 2028. The upgrades will involve reconfiguring the substation and installing new equipment, including a third transformer, while also enhancing backup service capabilities. Concurrently, JCP&L is completing two electric system upgrade projects in northern and eastern Monmouth County, benefiting over 4,000 customers and promoting wildlife safety by using designs that deter nesting birds. These projects include replacing aging infrastructure with more resilient materials, such as fiberglass crossarms, which offer improved maintenance and storm resistance. Overall, these initiatives reflect JCP&L's commitment to enhancing electric service and ensuring a more secure grid for its customers.
