The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is investigating the deaths of three dogs that were boarded at the PetSmart PetsHotel in Potomac Yard. The investigation began on July 1 after the death of a three-year-old Aussiedoodle named Clark, and has since expanded after two more dogs died under similar circumstances. All three dogs boarded during the same timeframe and experienced severe illnesses before dying shortly after their stays. PetSmart has been cooperating with the investigation, which includes regular inspections and employee interviews. The Animal Welfare League has highlighted the need for extensive research when choosing boarding facilities, noting that such facilities are not subject to annual inspections unless a complaint is filed. The cause of the dogs' deaths remains undetermined as necropsy results are pending for Clark while the other two dogs were cremated.
