Burkina Faso military thwarts major coup plot targeting Traoré

Burkina Faso's military government announced it had foiled a major coup attempt allegedly organized by current and former soldiers in collaboration with terrorist groups, with the plot reportedly orchestrated from neighboring Ivory Coast. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana stated the plan aimed to attack the presidential palace to create chaos and place the country under international supervision. Authorities accused two former army officers in Ivory Coast of masterminding the plot and passing sensitive information to militants to escalate attacks and incite public revolt. Several military personnel were arrested last week in connection with the scheme. The attempted coup is the latest in a series of alleged plots against Captain Ibrahim Traoré's government, which seized power in 2022 amid worsening jihadist violence. Despite the junta's promises to improve security, nearly 40% of Burkina Faso remains under the control of armed groups, and the country continues to face instability.
