Karen Read Appeals Murder Charges Dismissal

Karen Read's defense team has filed an appeal to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to dismiss two charges, including second-degree murder, related to the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe. Read's lawyers argue that a retrial on these charges would constitute double jeopardy since five jurors from her previous trial indicated they had unanimously found her not guilty of those charges. Despite Judge Beverly Cannone's ruling allowing retrial, Read's defense maintains that the jury's undisclosed acquittal should prevent further prosecution. A new trial for Read is scheduled for January 2025.
