California Approves World's Largest Battery Storage, Solar Project in Fresno
The California Energy Commission (CEC) has approved the Darden Clean Energy Project (DCEP), marking it as the first project fast-tracked under the state’s Opt-In Certification program, aimed at accelerating clean energy developments. The project will feature a 1,150 MW solar array with approximately 3.1 million panels and a 1,150 MW (4,600 MWh) battery energy storage system, making it the largest battery storage facility in the world, capable of powering 850,000 homes for four hours. Located on 9,500 acres of non-arable land in western Fresno County, DCEP is owned by IP Darden I, LLC, a subsidiary of Intersect Power, and will connect to the Pacific Gas & Electric grid. The Opt-In Certification program, authorized under Assembly Bill 205, mandates a 270-day environmental review to support California’s goal of 100% zero-carbon retail electric sales by 2045, as required by Senate Bill 100. The project will create more than 2,000 prevailing-wage construction jobs and includes $2 million in community investments over the next decade, starting with support for rural community nonprofits, emphasizing both economic and social benefits. California Governor Gavin Newsom and CEC Chair David Hochschild highlighted the project's significance for the state's clean energy future, underscoring its size, innovative design, safety measures, and commitment to community value.
