Hashem Abedi Attacks Prison Officers at HMP Frankland, Families Express Disbelief

Hashem Abedi, the brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, attacked three prison officers at HMP Frankland using boiling cooking oil and homemade weapons, resulting in serious injuries. Families of the victims from the 2017 bombing expressed their disbelief that Abedi was able to carry out this attack while in a high-security unit, urging the justice secretary to ensure he cannot harm anyone else. In a letter to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, they demanded that Abedi be placed in solitary confinement and denied any privileges, citing the ongoing threat he poses. The Ministry of Justice has since suspended kitchen access for inmates in separation centres and will conduct an independent review of the incident. Abedi, previously convicted for his involvement in the bombing that killed 22 people, had already attacked prison staff in 2020, raising concerns about his management in custody.
