Kidnapped Pilot Phillip Mehrtens Released

New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens, held hostage for over 19 months by the West Papua National Liberation Army in Indonesia, has been freed following intense diplomatic efforts by New Zealand and Indonesian authorities. Mehrtens was abducted on February 7, 2023, while working for Susi Air and was released in good health despite the ordeal. His release was achieved through negotiation, not force, and he was subsequently reunited with his family in Jakarta. The rebels had demanded recognition of Papuan independence but eventually agreed to a deal with the Indonesian government. Mehrtens' family has expressed profound gratitude to all parties involved in securing his release.
