First UK Baby Born After Womb Transplant in Trial
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Grace Davidson from north London has become the first woman in the UK to give birth after a successful womb transplant from her sister, Amy Purdie. Born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, which results in an underdeveloped or missing womb, Grace underwent fertility treatment and received the transplanted womb in 2023. The couple welcomed their daughter, Amy Isabel, on February 27, 2025, through a planned Caesarean section. This case provides hope to women with similar conditions, as the procedure indicates the possibility of conception via fertility treatment. The successful birth is the culmination of 25 years of research led by Professor Richard Smith and is part of a clinical trial that aims to perform more transplants. The event has been celebrated by the medical community as a testament to the power of modern science and the possibility of motherhood for many women previously thought to be infertile.
