Louisiana Enacts New Voter Registration Law

A new law in Louisiana, House Bill 506, requires organizations conducting voter registration drives to register with the Secretary of State's Office. This law, which took effect on August 1, mandates the submission of a 'Voter Registration Drive Contact Form' either in-person or via email. Critics, including the League of Women's Voters of Louisiana, express concerns that the law may deter organizations, particularly in rural areas with limited internet access, ultimately suppressing voter turnout. Violators could face fines up to $2,000 or imprisonment. The law was introduced after issues arose from a previous registration drive where forms were not submitted, resulting in students being unaware they were not registered. The deadline for registering to vote in the upcoming November elections is October 7th.
