Vietnam Plans $380M Cash Handouts for National Day

Vietnam is distributing 100,000 dong (approximately $3.80 to $4.00) to every citizen to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its National Day on September 2, a move expected to cost up to $380 million. The government has directed the Ministry of Finance, the State Bank of Vietnam, and local authorities to ensure the cash gifts are delivered either via bank transfer or in cash before the holiday, with measures to prevent omissions or duplications. Hanoi is preparing to host the largest National Day parade in decades, featuring military and civilian formations, an Air Force flyover, and cultural displays to commemorate the country's declaration of independence in 1945. Public transport in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City will be free on National Day as part of the celebrations. Citizens have expressed surprise and appreciation for the gift, noting the amount is equivalent to several cups of coffee. This initiative underscores the government's intent to demonstrate care for its people while marking a historic milestone.
