Australia Names Record 88-Athlete Team For 2025 World Athletics Championships Tokyo
Australia has named its largest-ever team of 88 athletes for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, featuring six Paris Olympic medallists and a strong mix of youth and experience. Highlighted athletes include reigning Olympic pole vault gold medallist Nina Kennedy, who is returning from hamstring surgery, and high jump gold medal favourite Nicola Olyslagers, who recently set a national record and tops the 2025 world rankings. Seventeen-year-old sprint sensation Gout Gout will make his senior global championships debut in the 200m, supported by other notable sprinters and the first-time qualification of all five national relay teams. The squad also includes multiple medallists from the Under-20 world championships, reflecting a new generation of talent, though notable absences due to injury include race walker Jemima Montag and sprinter Lachie Kennedy. Australian Athletics high performance general manager Andrew Faichney emphasized the team’s world-class quality and the sport's growing national relevance, highlighting the momentum generated from recent global successes. Contention remains in some events, such as the women’s 5000m, where appeals are pending over team selection, but overall, the team is seen as a strong medal prospect at the championships.
