Hungary Plans Lawsuit Against EU Over Border Costs

Hungary is preparing to sue the European Commission for reimbursement of approximately 2 billion euros spent on protecting the EU's external borders. Gergely Gulyás, chief of staff to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, emphasized that Hungary has not received adequate financial support from the EU despite incurring significant costs. The government has mandated its Minister for European Union Affairs to negotiate with the Commission regarding this issue, following Hungary's recent 200 million euro fine for non-compliance with EU asylum regulations. Gulyás criticized the EU's position on migration as hypocritical, particularly in light of Germany's recent decision to implement border controls. He asserted that Hungary's strict border policies are necessary to preserve the Schengen Agreement, which he believes is being undermined by insufficient external border protection. The Hungarian government plans to present its presidency program at the European Parliament next week, further highlighting its stance on migration and border security.
