Volkswagen,Ducati Unveil Prototype Electric Motorcycle With Solid-State Battery Charging In 12 Minutes
Ducati, under the Volkswagen Group, has unveiled an all-electric racebike prototype featuring the world's first near-production-ready solid-state battery pack, showcased at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. This breakthrough solid-state battery, developed in collaboration with PowerCo and QuantumScape, offers significantly higher energy density and rapid charging capability—charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 12 minutes—addressing major limitations of current electric motorcycles related to weight, range, and charging time. The Ducati V21L prototype, used in the FIM MotoE World Championship since 2023, served as a testing platform to refine this battery technology, which weighs less, holds more energy, and charges faster than traditional lithium-ion packs. Volkswagen plans to extend this solid-state battery technology to its other brands, including Volkswagen cars, Cupra, and Škoda, aiming for series production to revolutionize electric mobility. Industry experts recognize this as a significant step forward, although competitors like Mercedes, Honda, and Stellantis are also advancing solid-state battery development for their electric vehicles. The collaboration highlights the potential of solid-state batteries to become a game changer in e-mobility by offering improved safety, performance, and lifecycle benefits.
