Pennsylvania Plans Closure of Four Correctional Facilities for Cost Savings

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections has recommended the closure of the State Correctional Institution (SCI) Rockview and the Quehanna Boot Camp as part of a cost-saving measure, following a review under the Resource Evaluation and Mission Alignment Project. The closures aim to save the state $10 million in the next fiscal year and potentially over $100 million in future years, as both facilities require significant repairs and upgrades. Secretary Dr. Laurel R. Harry assured that all affected staff members will receive job offers at their existing pay and classification at nearby facilities. A legally mandated three-month public feedback period will follow the announcement before any final decisions are made. The closures reflect a broader trend of declining prison populations in Pennsylvania, with current state prisons at approximately 82% capacity. The proposal has faced opposition from the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, citing concerns over safety and the impact on prison staff and inmates.
