Cameron Percy of Australia took the first-round lead at the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional with a 5-under-par 67, despite limited preparation due to a recent back injury and wet weather conditions. Percy’s bogey-free round included an eagle on the par-5 sixth and a birdie on the eighth, helping him edge out South Africa’s Keith Horne by one stroke. Horne, who has multiple Sunshine Tour wins, also made an eagle on the par-4 eighth. Fellow South Africans Ernie Els and Darren Fichardt, along with Simon Khan and Mario Tiziani, were a further shot back. Percy credited the strong start of his playing partner, Denmark’s Soren Keldsen, for helping to elevate his performance.
