Dickson Ndiema Marangach, the man accused of killing Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei by setting her on fire, has died from burns sustained during the attack. Marangach reportedly poured gasoline on Cheptegei during a dispute over land and set her ablaze, resulting in burns to over 75% of her body, leading to her death four days later. Marangach suffered burns to over 40% of his body and succumbed to respiratory failure and sepsis while under police watch in a Kenyan hospital. Cheptegei's tragic death has highlighted issues of domestic violence in Kenya, particularly among female athletes. The Uganda Athletics Federation and Team Kenya have condemned the act and called for an end to gender-based violence. Cheptegei competed in various international events, including the 2024 Paris Olympics where she finished 44th in the women's marathon.
