The world is on track for a temperature rise of up to 3.1°C above pre-industrial levels, according to a new UN report, unless unprecedented global mobilization occurs to curb emissions. Even if current national climate commitments are met, temperatures are expected to rise by 2.6°C to 2.8°C, far exceeding the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement. The UN emphasizes the urgent need for countries to strengthen their 2030 climate pledges and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035 to keep the 1.5°C goal alive. Climate impacts already being felt include severe wildfires, extreme heat, and flooding, disproportionately affecting vulnerable regions. UNEP's Inger Andersen warns that without immediate action, the 1.5°C target will become unachievable, urging nations to act decisively at the upcoming COP29 summit. Despite the critical situation, the UN underscores the importance of reducing warming to save lives and prevent further damage.
