China's Wang Yi Backs Myanmar's Election Plans

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has expressed support for Myanmar's military junta's plan to hold fresh elections and return the country to a 'democratic transition.' This statement was made during a regional meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where Wang emphasized the need for political reconciliation within Myanmar's constitutional framework. The military government, which seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, has faced significant opposition and ongoing conflict, including from ethnic armed groups and pro-democracy forces. Despite promising elections, the junta has delayed the timetable as it struggles to control the situation, with plans to conduct a nationwide census prior to the polls. Analysts note China's dual role as an ally and arms supplier to the junta while also engaging with ethnic groups opposing the military. Additionally, China supports the ASEAN's five-point consensus aimed at addressing the crisis in Myanmar.
