A 17-year-old kayaker named Kahiau Kawai was rescued after spending nearly 12 hours clinging to his kayak off the coast of Honolulu, having capsized without a life jacket during a high school paddling practice. The U.S. Coast Guard, the Honolulu Fire Department, and other agencies, assisted by a volunteer lifeguard named Noland Keaulana, conducted the search. The Coast Guard used aircraft to locate Kawai early Thursday morning, marking the location with a flare, which guided Keaulana to the teen. Kawai was found with symptoms of hypothermia and dehydration but was otherwise stable. His rescue was a relief to his family, who experienced an emotional ordeal throughout the night. Kawai's mother expressed immense gratitude to the first responders and Keaulana for their efforts in bringing her son back safely.
