Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sri Lanka's new president, has appointed Harini Amarasuriya as the new prime minister, making her the third woman to hold the post in the nation's history. Amarasuriya, a college professor and first-time lawmaker, will also manage the portfolios of education, media, and women and children affairs. Dissanayake, who has taken the key finance portfolio, aims to steer the country out of its worst economic crisis in 70 years, while signaling potential changes to the $2.9 billion IMF bailout terms. The new president has also dissolved parliament, paving the way for a snap general election in November. Veteran legislator Vijitha Herath will handle foreign affairs and public security. The cabinet, which includes only four members, is the smallest in Sri Lanka's history.
