FA Investigates Crystal Palace Banner Targeting Nottingham Forest Owner
The Football Association has launched an investigation into a controversial banner displayed by Crystal Palace fans during a 1-1 Premier League draw with Nottingham Forest at Selhurst Park. The banner depicted Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis holding a gun to the head of midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, accompanied by text sarcastically denying allegations of blackmail, match-fixing, drug trafficking, or corruption, which Marinakis has consistently denied. This incident has further inflamed tensions between the clubs after Palace was stripped of its Europa League spot due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, with Forest subsequently taking their place, a decision Palace chairman Steve Parish called "the biggest injustice in the history of football." Nottingham Forest expressed outrage over the banner, viewing it as xenophobic and criticizing Palace for not taking stronger action to prevent its display. The FA’s investigation will consider disciplinary measures against Palace, while the incident has also coincided with uncertainty about Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s future amid reported disagreements with Marinakis. Additionally, high-profile managers like Ange Postecoglou, José Mourinho, and Brendan Rodgers are being considered as potential replacements for Espírito Santo.
