Irish Grocery Inflation Rises 5.86% Amid Increased Promotional Spending
Recent data from Worldpanel by Numerator and Kantar Worldpanel indicate that grocery price inflation in Ireland has risen to nearly 6%, significantly outpacing general inflation and continuing to strain household budgets. In the 12 weeks to mid-August 2025, grocery prices increased by about 5.86%, up from 5.43% in July, with shoppers spending an additional €68.2 million on groceries, driven in part by summer festivals, concerts, and the Galway Races. Alcohol sales notably surged by €7.2 million, alongside increased spending on suncare, soft drinks, chocolate, and energy drinks, reflecting a busy social season despite rising costs. Consumers are increasingly purchasing promotional and own-label products, which now hold a combined market share slightly above branded goods, as a strategy to mitigate inflationary pressures. Major retailers Dunnes and Tesco maintain the largest market shares at around 23.5% and 23.4%, respectively, with growth in online grocery shopping also contributing to market dynamics. Overall, while inflation remains high compared to previous years, consumer behavior shows adaptation through selective spending and promotional purchasing to manage the increased grocery costs.
