St. Petersburg, St. Tammany Cyclists Killed in DUI, Collision Crashes
Two separate fatal incidents involving cyclists occurred recently in the United States. In St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, 33-year-old James Bowie was killed when he was struck by a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer while riding his bicycle on Highway 1081. Meanwhile, in St. Petersburg, Florida, a 43-year-old man riding an electric bicycle was fatally hit by a Chevy Silverado driven by 36-year-old Robert Chase Self of Conroe, Texas. The Florida crash happened early in the morning on Gandy Boulevard at the intersection with 4th Street North; the driver overtook and collided with the cyclist, who later died at a hospital. Self was arrested at the scene on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and refused to take a breathalyzer test. Investigations into both crashes are ongoing.
