Germany Considers Rwanda for Migrant Processing
Germany is considering using asylum facilities in Rwanda, initially built and funded by the UK for a now-scrapped migration scheme, to process and deport migrants arriving illegally through the EU's eastern borders. This proposal by Joachim Stamp, Germany's migration commissioner, aims to address increasing public pressure and recent far-right electoral gains amid rising concerns over illegal migration and security. The plan, which could see about 10,000 migrants sent to Rwanda annually, comes after Sir Keir Starmer's government in the UK terminated the original Rwanda plan due to legal challenges and significant costs. The UK had already spent £318 million on these facilities, which now may be repurposed by Germany. Critics argue that such a scheme, deemed an expensive and ineffective gimmick by some, may not resolve the root issues of migration. The asylum procedures in Rwanda would be supervised by the United Nations under this new proposal.
