The Southern and Northern Power Distribution Companies of Telangana have submitted proposals to the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) to increase electricity tariffs for the 2024-25 financial year, aiming to address a projected revenue gap of ₹13,022 crore. The proposals include raising fixed charges for domestic consumers exceeding 300 units per month from ₹10 to ₹50, potentially generating an additional ₹1,200 crore in revenue. While the hike would mainly affect high-consumption households, over 80% of consumers using less than 300 units monthly would remain exempt due to the Griha Jyoti scheme. The TGERC is expected to conduct public hearings before finalizing any changes, a process anticipated to take around 90 days. The delay in submitting the Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) report has already incurred a penalty of ₹21 lakh on the discoms, highlighting the urgency of resolving these tariff adjustments. The government has pledged to support the discoms with ₹11,000 crore in subsidies, particularly for the agricultural sector.
