Hyundai Mobis Leads Korean Automotive Chip Ecosystem with 23 Firms in Private-Sector Alliance

Hyundai Mobis is spearheading South Korea's first private-sector collaboration to localize automotive semiconductor production and reduce dependence on foreign imports, which currently account for about 95% of the market. The company hosted the inaugural Auto Semicon Korea forum, bringing together 23 participants including major firms like Samsung Electronics, LX Semicon, and SK keyfoundry, as well as research institutions, to discuss building a sustainable domestic ecosystem and value chain. Hyundai Mobis is developing over 10 types of automotive chips in collaboration with these partners, aiming to standardize models to boost volume and efficiency, and plans to start manufacturing power management ICs and Si-IGBTs by 2026. CEO Lee Gyu-suk emphasized the importance of expanding independent semiconductor design capabilities and integrating companies from home appliance and mobile sectors to strengthen the local industry. The initiative reflects the growing strategic importance of automotive semiconductors amid the global market's projected growth to $138 billion by 2030, driven by advances in vehicle technology such as autonomous driving. Hyundai Mobis is positioned as a key Tier 1 supplier bridging automakers and chipmakers, leveraging its design expertise and production experience to accelerate domestic R&D cycles and create new business opportunities.
