Fledge Watch Begins for Bald Eagles Sunny, Gizmo in Big Bear Valley

Fledge Watch has officially begun for the Big Bear Valley eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo, marking the period when these young bald eagles prepare to leave the nest and take their first flights. At around 10 weeks old, Sunny is showing signs of readiness by flapping wings and hopping on the nest's edge, while Gizmo observes and mimics these behaviors, with both expected to fledge anytime between now and mid-June. This milestone has drawn tens of thousands of viewers worldwide who have followed the eaglets' growth via a live nest camera managed by Friends of Big Bear Valley, which also highlights the eaglets' gradual development, independence, and the supportive role of their parents, Jackie and Shadow. Although fledging is a critical and sometimes risky stage for bald eagles, these eaglets are expected to remain near the nest for several months post-fledging, learning to hunt and fish under their parents' guidance. The eaglets' progression from practicing wing flaps to full flight is celebrated as a beautiful natural event, symbolizing their transition to independence.
