WhatsApp Patches Zero-Click Hack Targeting iOS, Mac Users
Meta's WhatsApp has patched a critical zero-click vulnerability (CVE-2025-55177) that was exploited alongside an Apple OS-level flaw (CVE-2025-43300) to conduct highly sophisticated spyware attacks on iOS and Mac users. These chained vulnerabilities allowed attackers to deliver malicious exploits without any user interaction, compromising devices and stealing sensitive data, including messages. The attack campaign targeted specific individuals, including journalists and human rights defenders, with Meta notifying fewer than 200 potentially affected users and advising factory resets for full protection. Apple acknowledged the OS flaw was exploited in advanced attacks, while Amnesty International's Security Lab is actively investigating the campaign. Although the identity of the attackers remains unknown, these incidents highlight ongoing threats from government spyware and underline the importance of keeping software updated. Users of WhatsApp for iOS and Mac are urged to upgrade immediately to the patched versions to avoid exposure.
