NYPD Officer Shoots Man Holding Mother at Knifepoint in Bronx

A 34-year-old man was critically wounded after being shot by an NYPD officer in a Bronx apartment when he threatened his 61-year-old mother with a large kitchen knife. Police responded to a 911 call from a security guard who heard screaming and believed the suspect was trying to harm himself. Upon arrival, officers found the man holding his mother at knifepoint and spent over two and a half minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation and convince him to drop the weapon. During the standoff, the man repeatedly threatened to kill his mother and moved the knife toward her neck, prompting one officer to fire a single shot that struck the suspect and freed his mother. The mother was not injured, and the incident, captured on police body cameras, is under investigation. The officers involved were also taken to the hospital for evaluation.
