Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya made history at the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon by setting a new women's world record with a time of 2:09:56, becoming the first woman to break the 2:10 barrier. This remarkable achievement shattered the previous record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa. Chepngetich, who is self-coached, dedicated her victory to the late Kelvin Kiptum, a Kenyan runner who set the men's record last year and passed away in a car accident. The marathon also saw John Korir win the men's race with a personal best of 2:02:44. Nearly 50,000 runners from over 100 countries participated, making it one of the largest events in Chicago, and raising significant charitable donations. The event was celebrated for its record-breaking performances and international participation.
