Phoenix Mercury Waive Megan McConnell Sign Kiana Williams

The Phoenix Mercury have signed San Antonio native Kiana Williams to a rest-of-season contract following injuries to rookie guards Lexi Held and Megan McConnell. Held is recovering from a pneumothorax (partially collapsed lung) suffered in June, while McConnell was waived after sustaining a tibial plateau fracture in her right knee during a game in early June. Williams, a 2021 NCAA Champion with Stanford and known for her elite 3-point shooting, previously appeared in 27 WNBA games over three seasons and most recently played for the Seattle Storm in 2024. Despite the injuries, the Mercury have maintained a strong 11-4 record with a five-game winning streak, their best start since 2014. McConnell, sister of NBA player T.J. McConnell, had a standout college career but faces an uncertain future while rehabbing her injury. The roster moves aim to bolster the Mercury’s backcourt depth as they prepare to face the New York Liberty, the defending WNBA champions.
