Atkinson, who previously led the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-2020, has spent the last three years under Steve Kerr, helping the Warriors win the 2021-22 NBA championship. The Cavaliers, who recently fired J.B. Bickerstaff after two consecutive playoff appearances, were drawn to Atkinson for his head coaching experience and his reputation for player development. Atkinson is familiar with some of the Cavs' roster, having coached Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert during his tenure with the Nets. The hiring marks the end of an extensive search that also considered former Charlotte Hornets coach James Borrego. Cleveland's owner, Dan Gilbert, played a significant role in the decision, influenced by endorsements from key figures like Michigan State coach Tom Izzo.
