Pirates Move Oneil Cruz to Center Field

The Pittsburgh Pirates are moving Oneil Cruz from shortstop to center field, a decision driven by his struggle with errors at shortstop and his athletic potential in the outfield. Manager Derek Shelton and GM Ben Cherington emphasized that this change is considered beneficial for both Cruz and the team, aiming to give him a runway of games before the 2025 season. Despite being a natural shortstop, Cruz has made 24 errors this season and has never played center field in his career. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, acquired from Toronto, will take over at shortstop, while Nick Gonzales returns to second base. Cruz will initially serve as the designated hitter before transitioning to his new defensive role.
