Austin Man Arrested for Shelter Break-In, Dog Killed

Jacob Glenn Bender, 38, was arrested by Austin Police Department in connection with a break-in at the Austin Pets Alive! Town Lake Animal Center where he allegedly released most of the dogs from their kennels. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of August 14, resulted in one dog's death and injuries to at least five others, many caused by fights among the released dogs. Bender was charged with criminal trespass, a Class B misdemeanor, and may face additional charges as the case is still under investigation by the Animal Cruelty Unit. Surveillance footage showed Bender forcing entry by damaging the keypad system and taking two puppies, both of which were later recovered. In response to the break-in, the shelter has increased security measures including assigning dedicated guards and installing new safety locks.
