Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage after its Senate passed a landmark marriage equality law with a vote of 130 to 4, with 18 abstentions. The legislation, which now awaits royal approval, will come into effect 120 days after being published in the Royal Gazette, granting same-sex couples rights related to inheritance, adoption, medical consent, and property management. LGBTQ+ advocates celebrated the move as a historic victory for human rights and equality, marking Thailand as the third Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage, following Taiwan and Nepal. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, a supportive figure for the LGBTQ community, will host celebrations at his official residence. Despite its reputation for LGBTQ tolerance, Thailand's legal framework had not previously matched its social openness. Activists expressed hope that this step will foster a more inclusive society and boost tourism and the economy.
