A 63-year-old man, Charles Murphy, was arrested at the Palo Alto Transit Center for committing a hate crime and battery on Sunday. Murphy reportedly yelled derogatory remarks about Mexicans and assaulted two men: a Hispanic man in his twenties, who suffered minor injuries, and a man in his seventies after he refused to give Murphy a cigarette. The younger victim attempted to defend himself by displaying a pocketknife but ended up in a physical altercation with Murphy, who punched him multiple times. Both victims reported the incidents to the police, who arrived within a minute and cited Murphy for two counts of battery and a hate crime, releasing him shortly after. The police emphasized the swift response to the ongoing violence at the transit center. Prosecutors have yet to file formal charges against Murphy.
