Aurora Man Charged After Thanksgiving Shootout
Arnadin Varupa, a 32-year-old man from Aurora, faces five counts of attempted murder of a police officer following a Thanksgiving night shootout at an apartment complex. The incident began around 9:21 p.m. when multiple 911 calls reported gunfire, leading officers to locate Varupa at a nearby bus bench. After attempting to de-escalate the situation, Varupa opened fire on the officers, striking a police vehicle while they were inside. In response, officers returned fire, injuring Varupa in the arm and allowing for his apprehension without further incident. Police Chief Todd Chamberlain praised the officers for their restraint, noting that no civilians or officers were harmed during the exchange. Varupa's extensive criminal history includes prior arrests for attempted homicide and robbery, and he was recently released from parole.
