Instagram Tests New Location-Sharing Feature

Instagram is testing a new feature akin to Snapchat's Snap Maps, allowing users to share text and video updates on a map based on their location. Unlike Snap Maps, which allows public posts, Instagram's implementation restricts sharing to a selected group of friends, such as 'Close Friends' or mutual followers. This feature is currently available as an opt-in tool in select markets, with privacy and safety being emphasized by Meta spokesperson Christine Pai. The feature was previously known as 'Friend Map' during its development stage and is part of Instagram's ongoing trend of adopting popular ideas from competitors. Historically, Instagram had a private photo map feature that was discontinued due to low usage, and this new offering may reflect a renewed interest in location-based sharing.
