Global Maritime Pilot Demonstrates Complete Onboard Carbon Capture Chain
The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has published the first report on Project CAPTURED, marking the world’s first demonstration of a complete carbon value chain for onboard captured carbon dioxide (CO₂). Conducted in China in June 2025, the pilot involved the Evergreen Marine Corp’s Ever Top container vessel capturing CO₂ using an onboard carbon capture and storage system, followed by safe and controlled ship-to-ship, ship-to-truck, and overland transport to Baorong Environmental, where the CO₂ was utilized as feedstock to produce low-carbon calcium carbonate and post-carbonated slag. The project tracked CO₂ quality and quantity throughout, consistently exceeding 99.95% purity, and delivered 15.84 metric tonnes of captured CO₂ to the end user with no safety incidents. This milestone demonstrates the viability of capturing, transporting, and reusing maritime emissions in industrial processes, highlighting a practical path to maritime decarbonization. Meanwhile, Everest Group experts emphasize that while carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies are operational in hard-to-decarbonize industries like cement and steel, scaling CCU to impact global emissions requires overcoming technical, economic, and policy challenges. Together, these developments underscore the potential and complexity of CCU as a critical tool in the fight against climate change.
