Pepperdine University Sues Netflix Over 'Running Point' Trademark

Pepperdine University has filed a lawsuit against Netflix and Warner Bros. Entertainment, claiming trademark infringement over the upcoming series 'Running Point,' which features a fictional basketball team named the 'Waves' that resembles Pepperdine's own branding. The university alleges that the show's use of the name, colors, and even the year of its founding misappropriates its trademarks and could harm its institutional identity by associating it with inappropriate content. U.S. District Judge Cynthia Valenzuela recently rejected Pepperdine's request for a temporary restraining order to block the show's release, asserting that Netflix's branding does not mislead consumers. The university expressed concerns about the series' themes, which they believe conflict with their Christian values. 'Running Point,' created by Mindy Kaling and starring Kate Hudson, is set to premiere soon, amid ongoing discussions between the parties. Netflix and Warner Bros. have yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
