Japanese radio equipment maker Icom Inc. is investigating reports that its IC-V82 model walkie-talkies exploded in Lebanon, resulting in significant casualties. The explosions have killed at least 26 people and injured over 3,000 in what is suspected to be an attack orchestrated by Israel, though Israel has not commented. Icom, which ceased production of the IC-V82 model in 2014, suggests the devices may have been modified with explosives post-sale. The company is scrutinizing its supply chain and production protocols to determine the authenticity and modification of the devices. The incidents mark a potential new form of terrorism using everyday electronics, prompting calls for increased corporate oversight. The White House has warned against escalation in the already tense region.
