Maro Itoje Rejects Eddie Jones’ Leadership Critique

Maro Itoje, newly appointed captain of Saracens, has firmly rejected former England coach Eddie Jones’ claims that he is 'very inward-looking' and not suited for leadership. In a 2021 book, Jones suggested Itoje did not influence others off the field and even took acting lessons to improve his leadership, which Itoje has denied. Itoje emphasized that Jones’ assessment was inaccurate, stating that those who know him well would agree. He clarified that he worked with a psychologist to enhance communication skills, not acting. Saracens’ director of rugby, Mark McCall, supported Itoje, dismissing the notion that he is self-absorbed. Itoje aims to prove his leadership capabilities as he steps into his new role.
