Israel Intercepts Multiple Houthi Missiles from Yemen Amid Escalating Attacks
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted a missile launched from Yemen by Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeting Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport and central Israel, triggering sirens and sending residents to bomb shelters across multiple cities including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. This missile attack came shortly after the Jewish holiday of Shavuot and follows a pattern of increased Houthi missile and drone attacks against Israel since the Gaza war reignited in October 2023, with over 44 missile attacks and more than 10 drone attacks recorded since March 18. The Houthis claim their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians and have resumed attacks after a two-month Gaza ceasefire ended in March. While most projectiles have been intercepted, one missile in early May struck near the airport, causing injuries. Israel has retaliated with strikes inside Yemen targeting ports and the capital Sanaa's airport, and the U.S. also intensified strikes against the Houthis earlier this year before a temporary halt. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that the Houthis are proxies for Iran, which he holds responsible as the main force behind the attacks.
