Rome Fiumicino Airport Powers Grid with Recycled Nissan LEAF Batteries

Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is pioneering sustainable energy by integrating 84 reconditioned Nissan LEAF batteries into a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that provides 2.1 MWh of storage within a broader 10 MWh system operated by Enel and integrated by Loccioni. These second-life batteries, sourced from high-mileage vehicles and warranty returns, have been requalified to stringent safety and performance standards and are expected to remain operational for six to seven years, supporting the airport's net-zero emissions goal by 2030. The BESS works alongside a 55,000-panel solar farm generating 31 GWh of renewable electricity annually, ensuring clean and flexible power supply to airport terminals and offering grid services. Nissan emphasizes its commitment to sustainable end-of-life battery management, taking responsibility for recycling the batteries after their second life. This initiative, co-funded by EU Innovation Funds, highlights the viability of repurposed EV batteries for large-scale energy applications and represents a model that Nissan plans to expand across Europe. The project demonstrates a successful bridge between mobility and energy sectors, turning potential waste into valuable assets for clean energy transitions.
