Northern Illinois Proposes Talent Acquisition Fee for Transfer Portal

Sean Frazier, the athletic director at Northern Illinois University, has proposed a 'talent acquisition fee' to address concerns surrounding the college sports transfer portal system. This fee would require schools to pay a sum to other teams when signing players, similar to transfer fees used in European soccer. Frazier believes this could provide support for smaller programs and add transparency to the currently chaotic transfer process, where over 11,000 football players enter the portal annually. He emphasized that while student-athletes deserve compensation, institutions also need to benefit to sustain their programs. Northern Illinois, which recently defeated Notre Dame, plans to transition to the Mountain West Conference in 2026, a move aimed at enhancing its competitiveness. The proposal comes at a critical time when the college sports landscape is shifting due to new regulations that could directly impact player compensation.
