Pedro Martinez Recommended for Massachusetts Education Chief
Pedro Martinez, outgoing CEO of Chicago Public Schools, has been recommended by the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to become the next Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, pending final approval from Education Secretary Patrick Tutwiler, who has expressed his support. Martinez, selected from 42 applicants and one of three finalists, would be the first Latino to hold the position if appointed. Board members highlighted his success in raising graduation rates, test scores, teacher salaries, and supporting special needs and English language learners during his tenure in Chicago. Martinez was recently dismissed from CPS without cause amid contract financing disputes. While some board members expressed concerns about his lack of statewide experience, many pointed to his proven leadership and focus on equity and student outcomes. If approved, Martinez will oversee about 400 Massachusetts school districts and help shape statewide graduation requirements and educational strategies.
