ZeroAvia Plans Hydrogen Aircraft Manufacturing Hub Near Glasgow
ZeroAvia, a California-based hydrogen-electric aircraft engine developer, is establishing a major manufacturing site near Glasgow Airport in Scotland within the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS). The new Hydrogen Centre of Excellence will focus on producing high-temperature PEM fuel cell stacks and supporting systems, complementing ZeroAvia's US-based operations that develop electric motors and power electronics. Supported by over $250 million in private investment and more than £40 million in UK and Scottish government funding, including grants from Scottish Enterprise and investments from the Scottish National Investment Bank and UK National Wealth Fund, the facility is expected to create approximately 350 skilled jobs by 2028. ZeroAvia has secured nearly $10 billion in orders for its engines and components and aims to have a 20-seat aircraft engine enter service by 2026, with plans underway for larger 40-80 seat aircraft powertrains. The project reflects Scotland's strategic focus on green aviation and the broader effort to decarbonize the aviation sector, which currently accounts for 2-3% of global carbon emissions. Scottish government officials emphasize the facility's role in advancing clean energy innovation and economic growth within the region.
